Wide-Angle Hinges: What Does an Opening Angle of 155° to 165° Mean?
A wide-angle hinge is a specialised concealed cup hinge that provides a maximum opening angle of 155° to 165° and pulls the opened cabinet door completely clear of the carcass side. This creates what is known as zero protrusion, which is strictly required so that internal drawers or pull-outs can extend out of the cabinet carcass without collision.
What exactly is a wide-angle hinge?
A standard cabinet hinge usually opens a cabinet door up to an angle of 110°. At this standard angle, the inner edge of the door often still protrudes several millimetres into the clear internal opening of the cabinet. A wide-angle hinge, on the other hand, features complex kinematics with multi-jointed link arms.
When the door is opened to 155° or 165°, the mechanism not only swings the door open, but physically pulls it out of the clear opening. The principle resembles a folding bus door that lays flat against the exterior wall when open, fully clearing the entrance. Thanks to this engineering, the interior of the cabinet remains usable across its full width without the open door getting in the way.
Designs and mounting types
As with standard hinges, the design of the wide-angle hinge depends on the position of the door relative to the carcass. The following mounting types are relevant:
- Full overlay: The door sits completely over the front edge of the carcass side when closed. For this standard construction, full overlay concealed hinges with a wide opening angle are used.
- Half overlay: Two doors share a single central partition (twin doors). The hinge has a pronounced crank so that both doors can be fitted to a 16 mm or 19 mm thick chipboard panel.
- Inset: The door closes flush between the carcass sides.

When fitting or replacing wide-angle hinges, fitters and joiners must pay attention to precise technical specifications:

- Drilling pattern: The spacing of the fixing screws on the hinge cup is typically 45 mm or 52 mm.

Application & selection
Using a wide-angle hinge is technically essential whenever a full-extension runner or an internal drawer is located behind the cabinet door (frequently found in kitchen larder units or pull-out pantry cupboards). If the door were to open to only 110°, the extending drawer runner would rub against the inner face of the door and cause damage.
Another typical application is in corner units with bi-fold doors. Here, the wide-angle hinge connects the carcass to the first door leaf, allowing the entire door assembly to be swung well clear of the working area.
