Height-Adjustable Furniture Feet & Plinth Legs — Threads & Load Capacity Explained

Height-adjustable furniture feet and plinth legs are load-bearing hardware fittings that allow uneven floors to be compensated for, aligning cabinets or tables precisely horizontally. Adjustment is carried out via an integrated thread, typically M8 or M10. They define the final working height and ensure the structural safety of the piece of furniture thanks to their specific load capacity.

What exactly are height-adjustable furniture feet?

An adjustable fitting for furniture feet, often referred to in the trade as an adjuster foot, generally consists of a fixed shaft and a rotating foot plate or threaded insert. By screwing this element in or out, the overall length of the component changes seamlessly. This mechanism works like the supporting pillars of a foundation, adjusted with millimetre precision to the surface beneath to prevent stress and warping in the cabinet carcass.

Without precise levelling, door gap reveals can misalign, drawers can stick, or cabinet legs can fracture due to an uneven distribution of weight. Floor levelling is therefore a critical step during furniture assembly.

Types and variants

Depending on the area of application, fitters distinguish between various designs that differ in material and mechanics:

  • Plinth legs: These are mounted primarily under the kitchen cabinet and disappear behind the plinth fascia once installation is complete. They are usually made of robust plastic and offer large adjustment ranges of, for example, 100 mm - 150 mm.
  • Visible adjuster feet: These adjustable furniture feet serve simultaneously as a load-bearing element and as a visual feature on sideboards, chests of drawers, or bathroom furniture. Common designs for modern interior concepts are metal furniture feet. The geometry varies greatly, from round cylinders to square furniture feet. For darker decor, powder-coated black furniture feet are frequently used.
  • Adjustable table legs: Longer variants for worktops or lightweight tables. This must be strictly distinguished technically from a full height-adjustable desk, where a complex, typically electrical lifting frame dynamically raises the entire work surface. Individual height-adjustable table legs serve solely for one-off, static floor levelling by a few centimetres.

Dimensions, standards, and load capacity

The technical specification of an adjuster foot is strictly determined by its thread and maximum load capacity.

  • Thread sizes: The standard for mounting plates or threaded inserts is the metric ISO thread. An M8 thread (8 mm external diameter) is sufficient for light to medium-weight cabinets. For heavy carcasses, solid worktops, or high loads, an M10 thread is used.
  • Adjustment range: The tolerance compensation for visible furniture feet is typically +15 mm to +20 mm. Screwing the foot out too far beyond the threaded dimension drastically reduces leverage stability.
  • Load capacity: This is specified in kilograms (kg) per foot. A standard plastic plinth foot for the kitchen often carries 100 kg - 150 kg. With four feet fitted, this provides a total static load capacity of 400 kg - 600 kg, minus the tare weight of the furniture itself.

Application, selection, and installation

When selecting fittings, the empty weight of the carcass including the planned load must be precisely calculated. Two main systems exist for securing them to the furniture base:

  1. Plate mounting: Feet with an integrated mounting plate are screwed directly beneath the base of the furniture using chipboard screws. Suitable screws for this purpose have a 3,5 mm or 4 mm diameter with a PZ or TX drive.
  2. Threaded mounting: These consist solely of threaded pins. They are screwed into a threaded insert (such as a Rampa insert) or tee nut previously anchored in the wood. This requires precise pre-drilling into the timber.

The levelling process during assembly always begins at the highest point of the room floor. There, the foot is screwed in to its minimum height. The remaining feet are subsequently screwed out with the aid of a spirit level until the carcass stands perfectly true and plumb.
