HDF Boards Explained: Uses for Wardrobe Back Panels & Drawer Bases

A HDF board (high-density fibreboard) is an engineered wood product made from intensely compressed wood fibres and synthetic resin adhesive. It is characterised by a very high density exceeding 800 kg/m³ and, owing to its slim thickness – typically 2.5 mm to 5 mm – is predominantly used as a stabilising back panel or as a resilient drawer base in furniture construction.

What Exactly Is a HDF Board?

In contrast to MDF boards (medium-density fibreboard), HDF boards are pressed under significantly higher pressure and at higher temperatures. The result is an extremely dimensionally stable engineered wood product featuring a closed, smooth surface. This dense structure ensures the material resists bending and tear-out, even at very thin material gauges.

Much like the spine in the human body, a HDF board used as a back panel gives the piece of furniture its fundamental structural stability. It serves to brace the unit, preventing the carcass from racking or warping when placed under load.

Types and Variations

Depending on where it is installed within the piece of furniture, various surface finishes are used:

  • Raw HDF: Untreated and brown on both sides. This variant is often used where appearance is irrelevant, such as concealed core boards or fully glued assemblies.
  • Lacquered HDF: Coated on one or both sides with a decorative lacquer. Standard colours include white, black, or common wood decors. This is the industry standard for visible cabinet interiors.
  • Melamine-faced HDF: Pressed with a thin layer of melamine resin. This variant offers enhanced scratch resistance and repels moisture, making it ideal for heavily loaded drawer bases.

Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values

When planning and constructing furniture, specific technical parameters apply to HDF boards:

  • Thickness: Standard dimensions in furniture making are 2.5 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm. For heavier loads, such as exceptionally wide drawers, 5 mm thick boards are also utilised.
  • Density: According to the DIN EN 316 standard, the core density of a HDF board must exceed 800 kg/m³. In practice, values frequently range between 850 kg/m³ and 900 kg/m³.
  • Cutting dimensions: When designing drawer bases, the groove depth of the side components (often 4 mm - 6 mm) must be factored into the board cutting sizes; otherwise, the base will be too narrow and slip out of the channel.

Application & Selection

The primary applications include grooved or rebated back panels for carcass furniture and bases for drawers. When constructing large units, such as a wardrobe for 2 people, the HDF back panel is usually nailed, screwed, or slid into a groove to ensure the tall unit maintains an accurate 90° angle. For lower units as well, such as a sideboard for a TV or a lowboard for a TV, a precisely fitted HDF back panel provides the load-bearing capacity required for the entire carcass under the weight of electronic devices.

When customising furniture – for instance, building a desk from a worktop – HDF boards frequently serve as stabilising dividers within the supporting base units.
