Hinge Catch Spring Mechanism: Function & Structural Differences
The catch mechanism in a furniture hinge is an integrated spring mechanism that ensures the cabinet door stays securely against the carcass when closed and does not pop open unintentionally. This mechanism engages at the final closing angle, pulling the door into its final position with a defined spring force.
What Exactly Is the Catch Mechanism in a Hinge?
The catch is the mechanical core of conventional concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges. Inside the articulated arm sits a metal spring. When the cabinet door is closed, tension initially builds up. Once the opening angle falls below a specific threshold – usually between 10° and 20° – the mechanism passes a dead centre. From this moment onwards, the spring tension releases. The spring acts like an invisible magnet, actively pulling the door against the front edge of the carcass over the final centimetres and holding it closed under light tension.
For the fitter, this means that a properly functioning catch makes additional magnetic catches or mechanical latches completely unnecessary on standard doors.
Types of Hinges by Catch Mechanism
Depending on the desired operation of the cabinet door, different spring mechanisms are used:
- Hinges with standard catch: The classic variant. The door is pulled shut briskly over the final centimetres.
- Hinges with catch and soft-close damping: Here, the spring works against a hydraulic cylinder. The spring pulls the door shut, while the damper decelerates the movement. - Hinges without catch (free-swinging hinges): These hinges have no spring. They are strictly required when handleless fronts are fitted with a Push-to-Open system (tip-on). A standard catch would block the ejection mechanism of the push latch.

When planning and fitting furniture doors, the geometric and mechanical specifications of the hinge are vital. The catch mechanism is matched to these standard dimensions:

- Effective range of the spring: The catch typically engages at a remaining opening angle of 10° to 20°.

Application & Selection: Which Hinge for Which Door Overlay?
The catch mechanism operates independently of the door overlay type. Nevertheless, the hinge must be selected to match the position of the front relative to the carcass:
