MDF or Chipboard? Furniture Materials & Matching Screws
MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) consists of finely defibrated wood pressed under high pressure and features a high density, whilst classic chipboard is manufactured from glued, coarser wood chips. To ensure tear-free and permanently resilient fixings in both sheet materials, specialised wood screws with asymmetrical threads and matched drive profiles are strictly required.
What Exactly Are MDF and Chipboard?
Both materials are standard sheet goods in furniture making, yet they differ fundamentally in their internal structure and raw density.
Chipboard (particle board) has a density of approximately 600 kg/m³ to 700 kg/m³. It consists of coarse chips in the core and finer chips in the surface layers. Thanks to its structure, it provides good grip for screw threads, but tends to fray at the edges if it is not sealed with edging tape or melamine resin.
MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) achieves a higher density of 700 kg/m³ to 800 kg/m³. The material behaves similarly to fine mortar compared to coarse concrete: the extremely homogeneous structure allows for clean routed edges and profiles. However, the high density means that MDF splits very quickly when driving in screws without adequate pilot drilling.
Suitable Screws and Thread Types
The choice of fasteners depends on the board thickness and the drive type used. Standard wood screws and furniture screws for these materials feature a countersunk head and a sharp, deep thread that cuts cleanly into the wood fibres.
Certain diameters are firmly established for cabinet construction and fitting installation. Wood screws 4mm are frequently used for load-bearing joints, whilst wood screws 3.5mm are preferred for fixing hinge mounting plates.
The screw drive is crucial for effective torque transmission during assembly:
- PZ (Pozidriv): A cross-recess with additional ribs for superior grip. Wood screws PZ2 are standard for everyday dimensions.
- PH (Phillips): The classic cross-recess, which tends to slip out (cam-out effect) under excessive torque. Wood screws PH2 are often used here.
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values for Assembly
In furniture assembly, screw lengths are guided by the material thickness. Typical board thicknesses are 16 mm, 19 mm, and 22 mm.
- Fitting installation: For a 16 mm thick board, screws measuring 3.5 x 15 mm or 4 x 15 mm are used to prevent breaking through the outer surface.
- Carcass jointing: Screw lengths from 40 mm upwards are utilised here.
- Pilot drilling: In MDF, the drill hole diameter must match the core diameter of the screw precisely (e.g. a 2.5 mm or 3 mm drill bit for a 4 mm screw). Chipboard is more forgiving with direct driving, though pre-drilling is still recommended for fixings close to the edge.
Practical Application & Selection
In modern interior joinery, chipboard is frequently used for unseen carcasses or large desktop panels. If a desk cable grommet is retrofitted, chipboard can easily fray when cut with a hole saw – sharp tooling is essential here.
MDF is preferred for painted frontals or complex assemblies. When thick kitchen worktops or office desks must be joined securely, fitters rely on worktop connectors recessed into routed pockets on the underside of the panel. These are essential worktop fittings to pull joints completely flush.
If glass or acrylic elements need to be fixed to wood-based materials, specialised panel holders are used, secured with short countersunk screws into the sheet material. To conceal visible screw heads inside cupboards seamlessly, self-adhesive wood screw cover caps are applied as a finishing touch.
