Soft-Close vs. Self-Closing: How Does Furniture Damping Work?

Soft-close hydraulically slows down a furniture door or drawer over the final few centimetres and closes it silently. Self-closing, on the other hand, is a purely mechanical spring system that actively pulls a component against the cabinet carcass. In modern furniture fittings, both mechanisms are almost always combined to ensure smooth and automatic closing.

What Exactly Is Furniture Damping?

The terms are often used synonymously, but technically they describe two distinct components within a fitting.

A self-closing mechanism consists of a tension spring. When a drawer is pushed to within a few centimetres of the cabinet carcass, an activator catches the spring. The tension of the spring pulls the drawer shut for the remaining distance. Without damping, the front would slam hard against the cabinet edge.

This is where the soft-close system comes into play. It consists of a small cylinder filled with oil or gas. Much like a shock absorber on a car, this cylinder absorbs the kinetic energy of the closing door or drawer. The piston inside is slowly pushed into the cylinder by the pressure, controlling and decelerating the closing motion.

Types and Variants in Hardware Technology

Depending on the piece of furniture, these systems are used in different fittings:

  • Hinges: For standard opening doors, damping is usually concealed within the concealed hinge. Standard hinges with an opening angle of 110° for full overlay applications nowadays feature an integrated damping cylinder inside the hinge arm as standard. For older models, clip-on dampers can often be retrofitted. Matching solutions can be found in concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with soft-close.
  • Drawer runners: Here, the combination of a tension spring and a damping cylinder is most common. Drawer runners with self-closing ensure the drawer is pulled shut, whilst drawer runners with soft-close damping prevent impact.
  • Extension types: The damping mechanism is independent of the extension length. It is found on single-extension runners as well as on full-extension drawer runners, where the drawer can be pulled 100% out of the cabinet.

⚠️ Important distinction: A damped closing mechanism must never be confused with push-to-open (tip-on) drawer runners. Push-to-open is an ejection mechanism for handleless fronts that pops the drawer open when pressed. Combining both systems in a standard runner blocks the mechanism.

Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values

When planning and fitting damped runners, exact dimensions must be maintained so that the spring activator engages correctly:

  • Installation clearance: For side-mounted ball bearing or roller runners, a side clearance of 12.7 mm (per side) between the drawer side and the internal carcass wall is generally required.
  • Nominal lengths: Damped runners are available in all standard grid dimensions. For standard kitchen base units, 500 mm drawer runners are frequently used, whilst 400 mm drawer runners are often chosen for shallower chests of drawers. Lengths typically range from 250 mm - 800 mm.
  • Load capacity: The strength of the damper is matched to the load capacity of the runner. For heavy-duty drawer runners with a load capacity of 45 kg or more, correspondingly stronger hydraulic cylinders are fitted to safely brake the high moving mass.
  • Drilling pattern: Fixing is usually carried out according to the System 32 standard, a standardised row of holes with a hole spacing of 32 mm and a drill hole diameter of 5 mm.

Application & Selection

The choice between purely self-closing mechanisms and combined soft-close systems depends on where they are installed. In workshops or purely functional storage shelving, a simple self-closing mechanism is often sufficient. In living areas, kitchens, or bedrooms, the combination with damping is standard practice to minimise material wear and eliminate noise.

During installation, ensure that the cabinet carcass is completely square. If the cabinet is misaligned, the runners will not run parallel, which can cause the activator pin to miss the self-closing spring mechanism.
