Bi-Fold, Up-and-Over and Parallel Lift Flap Fittings: Differences Explained
Bi-fold lift systems, up-and-over flap fittings, and parallel lift fittings are specialised hardware mechanisms for wall units that differ in their movement path: the bi-fold flap folds in the middle, the up-and-over flap swings in an arc over the cabinet carcase, and the parallel lift flap travels vertically upwards parallel to the cabinet front.
What exactly are flap fittings?
A flap fitting is a technical hardware component that opens furniture fronts vertically upwards rather than swinging them open horizontally like a standard side-mounted concealed hinge. This design provides unobstructed access to the entire cabinet interior and prevents open doors from protruding awkwardly into the room.
The lifting action is supported by a mechanical spring system or a gas strut. These energy stores counterbalance the weight of the front so that the flap can hold its position continuously at any angle (multi-position stop) and is gently cushioned upon closing by an integrated soft-close damper.
The three variants in detail
Choosing the correct mechanism depends on the geometry of the wall unit, the ceiling height, and the required access.
- Bi-fold lift fitting: This variant requires a two-part front. When opened, the door folds in the centre and glides upwards. The two MDF or chipboard sections are connected via a specialised centre hinge. This solution is engineered for very tall wall units, as the handle on the bottom edge remains within easy reach for the user even when fully opened.
- Up-and-over flap fitting: This system uses a single-piece front that swings upwards in a wide arc above the cabinet top. It strictly requires sufficient clearance above the unit. This mechanism is installed on large, continuous fronts or on cabinets with protruding cornice mouldings, as the flap lifts clear over the profile.
- Parallel lift flap fitting: With this system, the single-piece front moves vertically upwards parallel to the carcase. It does not swing outwards into the room and requires no clearance above the cabinet top. This is the standard solution for cabinets with additional furniture modules installed above them, or for concealing built-in appliances such as microwaves.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
For flap fittings to function accurately, the front weight and front height must be calculated precisely. The lifting capacity of the fittings is specified in Newtons (N).
- Power range: Standard dampers cover ratings from 50 N to 400 N. A gas strut for heavy flaps can also manage solid wood fronts with high leverage forces.
- Front heights: Bi-fold lift systems are typically used for carcase heights of 480 mm - 1040 mm. Parallel lift systems are generally suitable for heights of 300 mm - 600 mm.
- Opening angles: Depending on the hinge and damper type, typical opening angles are 75°, 90°, or 107°.
- Drilling patterns: Carcase installation is usually carried out via the standardised System 32, where holes are spaced at 32 mm intervals with a diameter of 5 mm.
Application & selection
During planning, the total weight of the front including the furniture handle must be determined. Multiplying the front height by the front weight gives the power factor. This value is used to select the appropriate lift mechanism. If the calculated weight sits precisely on the upper limit of a damper, standard installation practice is to choose the next stronger variant. For widths of 600 mm and above, two flap stays (left and right) must always operate synchronously to prevent the front from twisting or jamming.
Various colour options are available to match the interior decor of the carcase. A gas strut in silver blends seamlessly into grey or metallic interiors. For dark, anthracite cabinets, a black gas strut is installed, whilst a white gas strut is used for white melamine coatings. A modern gas strut also features tool-free spring force adjustment to calibrate the closing speed precisely to the door weight.
