Clip-On vs. Slide-On: Concealed Hinge Mounting Types Explained

Clip-on mechanisms and slide-on systems represent two distinct methods for fixing concealed cup hinges to a cruciform mounting plate. While slide-on hinges slide into place and are secured with a fixing screw, clip-on hinges snap into place on the mounting plate without tools using gentle pressure. This saves a significant amount of time when installing cabinet doors.

What exactly is the difference between clip-on and slide-on?

In professional cabinet making, the choice of mounting method determines efficiency when fitting doors. Both systems connect the hinge arm to the cruciform mounting plate screwed into the cabinet carcass, yet they differ fundamentally in their mechanics.

With the slide-on method, the hinge arm is pushed onto the mounting plate from the front. A fixing screw must then be tightened using a screwdriver (usually PZ or TX) to secure the hinge. Depth adjustment of the door is achieved by loosening this screw, manually moving the hinge arm, and tightening it again.

The clip-on mechanism eliminates the fixing screw. The hinge arm hooks onto the front of the mounting plate and is pressed down at the back with light pressure until the mechanism audibly clicks into place. The clip-on latching functions much like a ski boot binding – targeted pressure is sufficient to create a firm, load-bearing connection. Disassembly is equally tool-free by pressing a release lever on the back of the hinge arm.

Technical variants and door overlays

Both fixing systems are available regardless of door positioning on the carcass. They are produced for full overlay constructions such as concealed hinges for full overlay doors, as well as concealed hinges for half overlay / dual doors on dividing panels. Solutions are also available for inset doors.

Similarly, the mounting type has no influence on the opening angle. Standard applications often use concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees. For specialised requirements, such as cabinets with internal drawers, wide-angle hinges are used, typically concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 165 degrees.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

Regardless of whether slide-on or clip-on technology is used, the drilling dimensions in the door remain identical. The standard cup diameter for concealed hinges 35 mm is standard across both systems.

Drilling depth: Typically 11.5 mm to 12.5 mm.
Cup distance (C-dimension): Usually 3 mm to 7 mm from the door edge.
Cruciform mounting plates: Screwed into the carcass according to System 32 (hole spacing 32 mm, distance to front edge 37 mm).
Adjustment ranges: Modern hinges offer 3-dimensional adjustment. Typical values are +/- 2 mm in height, +/- 1.5 mm side-to-side, and + 3 mm / - 2 mm in depth.

Many modern clip-on hinges are designed as concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with soft close. The soft-close mechanism (a hydraulic damper that slows down the closing speed) is integrated directly into the hinge cup or the hinge arm.

Practical application & selection

The choice between slide-on and clip-on depends on the requirements of the installation:

Slide-on hinges are inherently more cost-effective due to their design. They are suitable for smaller pieces of furniture with one to two hinges per door, where the fronts remain permanently on the carcass after initial installation.

Clip-on mechanisms are the standard in professional shopfitting and kitchen manufacturing. For large fronts supported by three or more hinges, sliding on and screwing multiple slide-on hinges simultaneously is hardly practical for a single installer. Clip-on hinges allow the heavy door to be hooked in at the top, aligned, and the remaining hinges snapped into place one by one. Furthermore, clip-on technology is strongly recommended if doors need to be removed regularly for transport or cleaning.
