Euro Screws vs Chipboard Screws — Threads, Dimensions & System 32 Drilling

Euro screws feature a blunt specialised thread for pre-drilled 5 mm holes in System 32, whereas chipboard screws feature a sharp, self-tapping thread that cuts directly into engineered wood materials.

Both screw types provide secure fixing for furniture components and hardware fittings, yet they differ fundamentally in their thread geometry, standard diameters, and mechanical installation principles. For joiners and installers, selecting the exact fitting screw is vital to ensure the long-term pull-out resistance of hinges and drawer runners.

What Exactly Are Euro Screws and Chipboard Screws?

The Euro screw (also known as a specialised screw or hardware fitting screw) was developed specifically for industrial furniture production. It features a thick core and an asymmetrical, blunt thread. It does not cut its own path into the material; instead, it displaces the wood fibres within an accurately pre-drilled row of holes. The Euro screw acts like a precision-fit metal dowel wedged into an exact hole, whereas a standard chipboard screw cuts its own path directly through the material.

The classic chipboard screw is the universal standard amongst wood screws and furniture fixings. It has a sharp tip and a deep thread that can extend all the way under the screw head. It is used to join components securely under tension, often without any pre-drilling.

Threads and Dimensions Compared

The sizing of both screw types follows different standards:

  • Euro screw dimensions: The standard external thread diameter is 6.3 mm. This is precisely engineered to achieve maximum grip in a 5 mm hole. Typical lengths range between 10 mm - 16 mm. A length of 11 mm is frequently used for telescopic runners, whilst 13 mm is standard for cruciform mounting plates.
  • Chipboard screw dimensions: Diameters vary significantly depending on the intended application. In furniture construction, 3mm wood screws, 3.5mm wood screws, and 4mm wood screws dominate. Lengths extend from a short 12 mm for thin back panels up to 80 mm for solid carcase assembly.

Visually, fixings are often chosen to match the furniture finish. Alongside classic zinc wood screws, black wood screws are widely used for dark carcases or matt hardware fittings.

System 32 and Matching Drilling

The Euro screw is inextricably linked to System 32. This international standard in furniture manufacturing defines a continuous line of drill holes in the side panels of a cabinet carcase. The pitch from hole centre to hole centre is exactly 32 mm, and the distance from the front edge is typically 37 mm.

The diameter of these holes measures precisely 5 mm. This is where the 6.3 mm thread of the Euro screw grips firmly. If such a hole is stripped due to excessive load, the joint can rarely be restored using another Euro screw. In these cases, a threaded insert with a metric internal thread or connecting sleeve bolts are used to restore tensile strength.

Application and Selection in Furniture Assembly

The choice between a Euro screw and a chipboard screw depends on the presence of a hole line and the specific fitting being mounted:

  • Mounting fittings: When installing drawer runner systems or concealed cup hinges onto pre-drilled cabinet sides, the Euro screw is the primary choice. Its flat head centres cleanly within the countersunk recesses of the hardware.
  • Carcase and back panel installation: For screwing chipboard panels together directly without pre-drilling, the chipboard screw is used.
  • Drive selection: Euro screws usually feature a PZ2 (Pozidriv) drive, which transfers high torque without slipping. With chipboard screws, choosing the exact driver bit is essential – whether using PZ2 wood screws or PH2 wood screws (Phillips), the bit must seat without play to prevent cam-out and stripping the screw head.
