San Remo Oak: All About the Light Wood Decor & Matching Fittings
San Remo oak is an industrially manufactured wood-effect decor for furniture surfaces, characterised by a light, warm colouring with a distinct, three-dimensional grain. It is usually applied as a melamine resin coating onto core materials such as chipboard or MDF, serving as a low-maintenance alternative to real oak wood.
What Exactly Is San Remo Oak?
From a technical perspective, San Remo oak is not solid wood, but rather a printed decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin and pressed onto a substrate board under high pressure and heat. This melamine coating makes the surface scratch-resistant, liquid-repellent, and resistant to standard household chemicals. The melamine layer acts like a technical protective shield for the interior paper, withstanding daily mechanical stresses in furniture construction.
Unlike other oak decors, San Remo oak features a sandy, slightly yellowish undertone. The grain displays distinct pores and subtle cracks, yet remains less rustic than Wotan oak and warmer in tone than the often greyish Sonoma oak. The surface is frequently finished with a synchronised pore finish – a textured embossing that precisely follows the path of the printed wood grain to create a realistic tactile feel.
Types and Combinations in Furniture Making
This decor is rarely used in isolation. In modern cabinet making, San Remo oak is often combined with solid colours to create contrasts:
- With white: For a light, Scandinavian aesthetic.
- With anthracite or black: For an industrial contrast, where dark edges or fronts frame the wood decor.
The edges of the panels are generally finished with an ABS edging tape. This thermoplastic plastic edge banding is applied using hot-melt adhesive and permanently seals the exposed cut edges of the chipboard against moisture ingress.
Dimensions, Standards, and Technical Machining
When working with melamine-faced boards in San Remo oak, standard industry specifications for cabinet carcass and front construction apply.
- Board thicknesses: Typical core boards feature a thickness of 16 mm, 18 mm, or 19 mm.
- Edging thicknesses: Matching edge banding is usually 1 mm or 2 mm thick.
- Cutting: To prevent chipping on the hard melamine surface, a scoring saw blade is strictly necessary during cutting.
- Drilling: Sharp tungsten carbide (HW) drill bits must be used when fitting hardware. A standard cup drilling for a concealed hinge requires a diameter of 35 mm.
Applications & Selecting Matching Fittings
When assembling furniture finished in San Remo oak decor, the choice of fittings plays a decisive role in both appearance and functionality. Because the decor is highly adaptable, handles and connecting elements define the final style.
