Shelf Support Types: Pegs, Shelf Studs & Glass Shelf Supports

A shelf support (also known as a shelf stud or shelf pin) is a mechanical fitting inserted into pre-drilled holes in the side panels of furniture to hold shelves horizontally and securely. Depending on the material of the shelf and the required load capacity, different variations such as cylindrical pins, spoon shelf supports, or dedicated glass shelf supports are used.

What Exactly Are Shelf Supports?

From a technical standpoint, shelf supports are small brackets that bear the weight of an inserted shelf along with its load, transferring the forces into the vertical side panels of the furniture carcass. They act like tiny steel beams within the cabinet wall that must withstand high shear forces. Installation is usually tool-free, carried out by simply inserting the fitting into pre-drilled holes. The shelf is then laid loosely on top, pushed on, or clamped in place.

A precise fit inside the drill hole is essential, as excessive play drastically reduces the load-bearing capacity of the fitting and can cause the chipboard to tear out.

Types and Variations

The design of the support depends on the material of the shelf and the structural requirements of the piece of furniture.

  • Push-in pegs (cylindrical pins): The simplest design. A solid pin made of metal or plastic, sitting half inside the timber and half protruding. The shelf rests directly on the rounded pin.
  • Spoon shelf supports: These classic shelf supports feature a cylindrical pin for the drill hole and a flattened, spoon-like resting surface. This increases the contact area with the wooden shelf and prevents pressure marks on the material.
  • Glass shelf supports: Because glass would slip and scratch against bare metal, glass shelf supports are fitted with soft rubber or plastic cushions. They are frequently designed with a small groove or a suction cup to secure the glass pane against slipping.
  • Locking / clamping shelf supports: This variant secures the shelf from above as well. The shelf clips directly into the fitting. This prevents accidental lifting or tilting, which is particularly vital under heavy loads or when moving the furniture.
  • Right-angle shelf supports: These grip the edge of the shelf at a 90-degree angle. They are often screwed directly to the wooden shelf from beneath to provide the carcass with extra structural rigidity.

Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values

In modern furniture construction, hardware dimensions are strictly standardised to ensure full compatibility.

  • Drill hole diameter: The two definitive industry standards for pin diameter are 3 mm and 5 mm. Less commonly, 7 mm can be found.
  • Drill hole depth: The pin extending into the side panel is usually between 7 mm - 10 mm long. The hole in the carcass must be drilled to a corresponding depth (typically 8 mm to 12 mm in a 16 mm or 19 mm thick chipboard panel).
  • System 32: Most industrially manufactured cabinets utilise a continuous hole line pattern. In this system, the pre-drilled holes for the supports have an exact vertical spacing of 32 mm from one another.
  • Load capacity: A set of four solid metal shelf supports (5 mm) in dense chipboard can typically hold loads of 15 kg - 40 kg. Plastic supports provide a significantly lower load capacity.

Usage and Selection

Choosing the correct fitting starts by measuring the existing drill holes inside the cabinet (3 mm or 5 mm). For lightweight shelves in wardrobes, simple plastic push-in pins are sufficient. As soon as heavy loads such as books or tools must be supported, solid shelf supports made of nickel-plated steel or zinc alloy are strictly necessary.

If a glass shelf is being fitted into a display cabinet, only cushioned supports must be used to prevent stress cracks in the glass. When the cabinet is free-standing or subjected to movement and vibration (for instance in a caravan), clamping shelf supports offer the most secure technical solution.
