How to install the claw nuts commonly called T-nuts?

How to install the claw nuts commonly called T-nuts?

T-nuts are essential components for fastening furniture. They are used to join parts made of natural wood, plywood, wood chips and composite materials. T-nuts provide a stable and strong connection between two parts and do not disturb the aesthetics of the furniture, as the assembly leaves a completely even surface.

What are claw nuts?

In Anglo-Saxon countries, claw nuts are referred to as t-nuts. A single, universally applicable name ensures that everyone knows what they are talking about. In UK, however, there are many parallel names: ball nuts, claw nuts, rivet nuts and even hammer nuts. T-nuts are nuts with a long and thin body, ending in a flange. Their shape may resemble the letter "T" (hence: t-nuts). The method of joining two wooden parts using T-nuts is considered to be simple and strong.

A sliding mechanism ensures that a bolt from the opposite side inserted into the nut will be held securely when it is moved. There are many variations of this type of mounting accessory. We distinguish between toothed and hooked claw nuts, which embed themselves even more firmly into the wood, and smooth products. With regard to the material used in production, we can speak of plastic claw nuts and metal claw nuts - usually made of galvanised steel, zinc-aluminium alloy or nickel.

How to use t-nuts and what for?

T-nuts - are a great accessory, chosen by furniture manufacturers and DIY enthusiasts alike. The simple mechanism of t-nuts, together with their high level of efficiency, makes these items often chosen as basic fastening parts. They are used, among other things, for assembling bookcases, attaching chair and table legs and many other components. However, the classic types of locknuts will only be suitable for perpendicular connections (such as the connection between a chair seat and a wooden furniture leg).

T-nuts resemble rivet nuts to a large extent, with some exceptions. For example, nuts with octagonal bases have been developed for machine assembly. When purchasing this product, it is recommended to check the technical specifications carefully. It is advisable to check the technical specifications carefully when purchasing this product in order to choose accessories that you can assemble yourself.

How to mount the t-nuts?

Depending on the type of t-nut, assembly is carried out either manually - by gently pushing the t-nut into the hole - or by using a hammer. Some t-nuts may be profiled and threaded, while others are completely plain at the base and sides. In any case, however, the basis for the correct installation of t-nuts is to take the appropriate measurements to create a hole in the wood that is not too tight, but also not too large. This is of course done with a drill. It is best to equip yourself with special drills for wood.

How do I mount the t-nuts in plywood?

Installing t-nuts in plywood is something you can do yourself at home or in the workshop. To do this, first lay the plywood with the front face down. Once the holes have been drilled, install the t-nuts on opposite sides of the holes. The nuts should be completely flush with the surface, so that no part of them protrudes beyond the line of the plywood. If there are any irregularities, they must be smoothed out with a hammer (with thin plywood, however, care must be taken not to let the material fall apart).
